Gamer Spent REAL $2 500 000 on a virtual property in a “free to play” MMO – the biggest online shopping spree ever?

Gamer Spent REAL $2 500 000 on a virtual property in a “free to play” MMO – the biggest online shopping spree ever?I guess we all already know that “free to play” games aren’t free at all and are built to lure people into spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on virtual good, but this guy took it on a whole new level. An anonymous player of Entropia Universe by Calipso Games (a total suckage of a game where ALL in-game items are sold for hard cash, i repeat that, ALL) had sealed a deal of spending $2,5 MILLIONS of REAL dollars on 25,000 virtual pieces of land, each sold for $100. Tell me about the biggest shopping spree ever. But, turns out, this may actually be a clever investment move (unless Calipso goes belly up in the nearest future). Could we be facing a beginning of a new era in banking and real estate? (more…)

Consumers vs. Assholes – Part 1: Penny Arcade, Ocean Marketing and Russian Mafia

Consumers vs Assholes – Part 1: Penny Arcade, Ocean Marketing and Russian MafiaCouldn’t keep from throwing my 5 cents in. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Ocean Marketing is a PR “agency” led by Paul Christoforo, the asshole of such an epic proportions that you could fit in Enterprise and Babylon5 both at the same time, and who hanged himself to dry over at Penny Arcade after attacking his own customer AND then Mike Krahulik. The shit storm that rose after is wonderful not only because it’s got a mention at all the main gaming portals, but also because it took the whole business of people in the game industry being assholes towards their customers for many years on a whole new level. Wait, but what the Russian mafia has to do with anything?.. (more…)

SOE Learns Its Lessons: The SOE Authenticator Available For Sale

SOE Learns Its Lessons: The SOE Authenticator Available For SaleAfter Sony Online Entertainment was being hit by hackers all of its subscribers suffered dearly for the lack of security on SOE’s side. Looks like SOE learned its lessons after all: Fan Fairy 2011 brings announcement of SOE Authenticator being released to ensure account security for all SOE Station accounts. The thing is similar to the device used by Blizzard for World of WarCraft accounts security and will provide its user with a unique, one-time authenticator code (PIN) to use in conjunction with the account’s regular password. How – according to SOE – the thing will work? (more…)

Know-how: How a stone age brain, decision-making and game sales are all tied in one or Why I’m buying unneeded stuff?

Know-how: How a Stone age Brain, Decision-Making and Game Sales are all tied in one or Why i'm buying unneeded stuff?A lot of game companies have summer sales right now and some keep sending you their offers all over the year, like Lord of the Rings Online keeps sending me those messages about a “new” sale of skill books or something similar, over and over. As a “victim” of the latest sale on Steam i assume that any of you could have bought stuff because of some sale letters you got in the past. Maybe even when it turned out to be not the best idea to spent any money – when you gave it a thought some time after paying, that’s it. Some people even buy a lot of stuff for “free to play” games and then count pennies until their next salary. So, why is this happening? And it’s not only about the game companies – ever had any acquaintance who spent money on “earn money from home” or “generate pin-point traffic” scams? Scammers and salespeople know a special thing about your brain and they know how to use it to make you pay before you even think. And here is how it works. (more…)

Know-How: Make Money Playing Online Games – Myth or Reality?

Know-How: Make Money Playing Online Games – Myth or Reality? This is analytical post, i warn you. Well, as much analytical, as this theme could be IMHO. I’ve been reading several articles on the subject of “how to earn money playing games” and it seems to me that people are constantly trying to find a way to pull this trick off: to earn money by playing a game, i.e. by doing no real work and getting all the good stuff at the same time. No wonder everyone wants that. But this post isn’t for boasting about a new “magical” way to earn money, no – i want to sum up whatever I’ve heard on the matter around the Internets and look critically at it. Really, is that even possible, to earn anything by just playing a game? Well, my answer is “no” – mostly you still have to work hard to earn anything, but at least this work has something to do with gaming. So, let’s sort out what can of work might that be? (Side note – no links provided, to avoid even accidental promotion of scammers and such).

Rift Planes Of Telara Tips And Tricks: How To Subscribe In A Specific Currency Of Your Choice And Get Game Cheaper

Rift Planes of TelaraThis is a little tip to whoever else is pre-ordering RIFT: Planes of Telara now. As you may know, RIFT has 3 different prices: in Dollars, Euros and Pounds: $ 49.99 / € 49.99 / £ 34.99 (for Digital Standard Edition, for example). But when you try to buy RIFT, you’re not being offered to choose which currency you want to pay in, and when you have to subscribe after buying the same, they also don’t ask what currency you want to subscribe in – they just try to shove it up your… wallet, that’s it. I was offered to pay in Euros but wanted Dollars instead, so i contacted RIFT Support and now guess what did they said? “You will have to use Euros” because “we do not have the ability to change your billing currency”. WTF, how can’t they control their own system!? Well, the hell with dumb support, i did it for them and subscribed in Dollars, not Euros. If you need to do the same, you came to the right place. Rift Planes of TelaraThose of you who participated in beta events or had been subscribed to Trion mailing list, or just have been online on Steam yesterday – there’s no news for you. Everyone else, get out of under a rock and find out that

RIFT’s release dates are March 1 for North America and March 4 for Europe, respectively. Right now pre-order is available for Digital Standard Edition ($ 49.99 / € 49.99 / £ 34.99) and Digital Collector’s Edition ($ 59.99 / € 59.99 / £ 39.99) – both available from Trion website itself, plus Steam and Direct2Drive. There’s also a physical Retail Collector’s Edition available in real-life stores, but i’m totally not interested in that because we don’t have GameStop shops in Russia. (more…)

Professional Chinese Gold Farmer tells all – Exclusive Interview with Jared Psigoda

MarkeeDragon released an YouTube video featuring interview with Jared Psigoda, who is a self-proclaimed king of the Chinese goldfarmers. He talks about everything goldfarming, the interview is pretty long – almost 40 minutes – but it’s totally worth watching it.

I wrote an article about goldfarming just a few weeks ago, so for me it’s really interesting to compare what i have found and what this guy is talking about.

Online Games and Cash Shops: Why People Pay

Online Games and Cash Shops: Why People PayMost of the contemporary games work on micro transactions and have their own cash shop where you’re supposed to be spending more and more money. Studies show (according to PlaySpan and Frank N. Magid Associates) that said cash shops are going to generate around $17 billions by 2015, and American gamers alone have spent on micro transactions around $250 millions in 2009. Why people buy things that don’t even exist is another story, but why spent so much? Here are the basic reasons on why people part with their money. (more…)

Lord of the Rings Online: How f2p Coexists With p2p

Lord of the Rings Online: How f2p Coexists With p2pI believe, many of us gamers who read sites like Massively or Gamesradar already heard early this month about how successful turned out Turbine’s venture into F2P market. According to Turbine, 20% of the former players came back to play and also over a million of new accounts was created during a month after LOTRO went Free to Play, resulting in 300% increase in concurrent users and 400% increase in active players overall. While Turbine bosses are busy bathing in cash checks, looks like it’s safe to say for me that Free to Play clearly wins over Pay to Play business model (okay, there HAD been an mmorpg that went down no matter getting on F2P rails, but that was Acclaim’s fault – we’ll speak of it another time). Now, is that really so? (more…)

A short thought on mmos market state by eyes of a gamer

A short thought on mmos market state by eyes of a gamer I’ve spent a lot of time looking all up and down online games lists like Mmorpg.com, and even more time i invested in taking a look at those most popular games, reading their player community reviews and seeing the games with my own eyes. There are some basic tendencies i have spotted in the process, they are all well worth their own posts (i totally should write them sometime), but here comes the summary first. (more…)

MMORPG Gold Selling – Not all that glitters is gold

MMORPG Gold Selling - Not all that glitters is Gold “Buy WOW Gold Cheap”, “Buy Maple Story Mesos”, etc. – we, as gamers, are practically plagued by the ads like these. We see them inside the Google AdSence rotation, we are spammed with them while playing our games and reading our emails… More on that, many of us are directly abused by gold farmers and their in-game activity like robbing us of good spots and top-rated mobs. Still, I’m sure i would be safe to say, that even if you didn’t buy in-game currency, someone you know did that, and maybe more than once. This is a huge market, but were you ever wondering how it’s working and what you are stepping into when you decide to “buy cheap gold”? (more…)
