Know-How: Role-Playing In MMO Worlds – Why Some Games Have More Opportunities For A Role-Player Than Others?

Know-How: Role-Playing In MMO Worlds - Why Some Games Have More Opportunities For A Role-Player Than Others? We all know that some people like to role-play in games, we have friends that like it or even love to do that by ourselves. After all, any game that a human being ever made – be it a children game, or a table, or a computer, or an online game (especially an online game!) – it is all about playing some role. Online games took it out onto a new level where not only we can see a lush, 3D world with some lore, but also we are able to share it with other people. But as you may know, not every game is good enough for a role-player person. Why is that so? What is that “role-playing heaven” thing, why it’s present in some games and totally lacked in others? And how to find a game that will suit all your needs as a role-player? (more…)

Rift Planes Of Telara Tips And Tricks: How To Subscribe In A Specific Currency Of Your Choice And Get Game Cheaper

Rift Planes of TelaraThis is a little tip to whoever else is pre-ordering RIFT: Planes of Telara now. As you may know, RIFT has 3 different prices: in Dollars, Euros and Pounds: $ 49.99 / € 49.99 / £ 34.99 (for Digital Standard Edition, for example). But when you try to buy RIFT, you’re not being offered to choose which currency you want to pay in, and when you have to subscribe after buying the same, they also don’t ask what currency you want to subscribe in – they just try to shove it up your… wallet, that’s it. I was offered to pay in Euros but wanted Dollars instead, so i contacted RIFT Support and now guess what did they said? “You will have to use Euros” because “we do not have the ability to change your billing currency”. WTF, how can’t they control their own system!? Well, the hell with dumb support, i did it for them and subscribed in Dollars, not Euros. If you need to do the same, you came to the right place. Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And End – Part 3

Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And EndThis is Part 3 of the story of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. A story of the fail that really was famous in it’s days, the story of a game that was pretty much fail at the beginning of its life – but got fixed, patched and in time became a real gem that would shine if this game was released, say, last or this year – but not many people know about it. Because if you fail once, it’s almost impossible to avert the damage (and Square Enix is learning this lesson now too, i bet). So, we all heard it was a big fail, right? But how and why did it happened in the first place? And why now I’m calling this game “a gem” when you probably heard no one plays it now? (more…)

Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And End – Part 2

Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And End This is Part 2 of the story of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. A story of the fail that really was famous in it’s days, the story of a game that was pretty much fail at the beginning of its life – but got fixed, patched and in time became a real gem that would shine if this game was released, say, last or this year – but not many people know about it. Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And End – Part 1

Vanguard. Saga Of Heroes: The Famous Fail Beginning And EndPreviously i wrote the Famous Fails tag for those games that look famous and popular, but in truth – if you look closely – they are actually a pretty bad choice to play. Now, this is a different story. A story of the fail that really was famous in it’s days, the story of a game that was pretty much fail at the beginning of its life – but got fixed, patched and in time became a real gem that would shine if this game was released, say, last or this year – but not many people know about it. Know-How: Why People Play Bad Games?

Know-How: Why People Play Bad Games?I’ve been watching different communities for years now, and on my way of finding a good game to play i often saw those games that weren’t even worth the time spent on their  client download, but still there are people who play it. There are games which forums are full of rage against bugs or defective support team, but people still play. And at all times there are people saying “the game is great, you just don’t know how to play it” (i had a lot of feedback mailed to me concerning
Famous Fails: Lineage 2 Review post, which i cross-posted on some MMO forums). How is that? Why people play bad games? And why does it matter at all? Well, it matters because bad games will exist for as long as we play them – there’s no need to make anything better since the old ones are generating income, really! (more…)

Know-How: Game Design and Player Manipulation – Part 4

Know-How: Game design and player manipulation
It’s been some time since i promised to post the final part, and it’s time to fulfill the promise! Here it comes: the part 4 of my story about behavioral game design and player manipulation, at last. If you are new, first read previous parts here: part 1, part 2 and part 3. The previous parts are covering all the very basics of behavioral game design – what it is and how it works. And why you should know about it – because it’s a “stealth technology” that makes people play, actually (well, not only it, but it’s a part of the whole thing). This time I’m talking about the practical “formulas” used by developers in online games to make us play hard or even forever. (more…)

Know-How: Game Design and Player Manipulation – Part 3

Know-How: Game design and player manipulationIt’s been quite a pause after i wrote
part 1 and part 2, it’s time for a new part in this story! For those who just have joined us, I’m talking about game design here – the one based on behavioral psychology (which is all about how people are acting in different situations and why). If you think that such a complex thing has nothing to do with the games we play, you are dramatically wrong – if you play a game (almost any game these days) – you’re seeing behavioral game design up close. So it’s very useful for you as a player to know how exactly it’s working – because it’s that what makes those kooks who play MMOs play until they drop out of work, college and human life, and also because you’ll find out why Final Fantasy XIV sucks on a whole new level!

Know-How: Game Design and Player Manipulation – Part 2

Know-How: Game design and player manipulationWe’re back on track with the “Know-How” business – last time i was talking about why people play online games so much. In the previous part i spoke of a Skinner Box, the basics of behavioral psychology and how the hell all of this has in common with the game design. This time I’m going to tell you about some more sophisticated tricks in game design that make you want to play a game so bad, that you often find yourself sitting at your PC in the morning, after a sleepless week-end night. Professional Chinese Gold Farmer tells all – Exclusive Interview with Jared Psigoda

MarkeeDragon released an YouTube video featuring interview with Jared Psigoda, who is a self-proclaimed king of the Chinese goldfarmers. He talks about everything goldfarming, the interview is pretty long – almost 40 minutes – but it’s totally worth watching it.

I wrote an article about goldfarming just a few weeks ago, so for me it’s really interesting to compare what i have found and what this guy is talking about.

Know-How: Game Design and Player Manipulation – Part 1

Time to speak about something, that would shed a light on why people play games so much. The fact that you may not be aware of, is that contemporary game design rely heavily on behavioral psychology. It’s a very popular psychology branch nowadays, because it focuses on experiments and observable actions. Behaviorists had found that major discoveries of their experiments are species-independent. There are general rules for learning how our minds respond to their environment, meaning that if they had found a pattern, that works on rats, it will work on humans too. This is what contemporary game design is based on: a Skinner Box. (more…)

Online Games and Cash Shops: Why People Pay

Online Games and Cash Shops: Why People PayMost of the contemporary games work on micro transactions and have their own cash shop where you’re supposed to be spending more and more money. Studies show (according to PlaySpan and Frank N. Magid Associates) that said cash shops are going to generate around $17 billions by 2015, and American gamers alone have spent on micro transactions around $250 millions in 2009. Why people buy things that don’t even exist is another story, but why spent so much? Here are the basic reasons on why people part with their money. (more…)

Online Games Addiction: The Crude Reality

Online Games Addiction: The Crude RealityYeah, it is. When someone tells you’re an MMO addict, you usually answer them with “nay, there’s no such thing like a video game addiction” and go play World of Warcraft. And at that point you are absolutely… wrong! Since the news of WOW hitting “12 millions of players” mileage had come, i feel i should start getting onto my blog’s main theme – what games do to make you play day and night and spent money. So, i’m starting with this not-quite-a-newsflash, that might still passed unheard by some players. You should know: addiction to MMO games is a crude reality. (more…)

Lord of the Rings Online: How f2p Coexists With p2p

Lord of the Rings Online: How f2p Coexists With p2pI believe, many of us gamers who read sites like Massively or Gamesradar already heard early this month about how successful turned out Turbine’s venture into F2P market. According to Turbine, 20% of the former players came back to play and also over a million of new accounts was created during a month after LOTRO went Free to Play, resulting in 300% increase in concurrent users and 400% increase in active players overall. While Turbine bosses are busy bathing in cash checks, looks like it’s safe to say for me that Free to Play clearly wins over Pay to Play business model (okay, there HAD been an mmorpg that went down no matter getting on F2P rails, but that was Acclaim’s fault – we’ll speak of it another time). Now, is that really so? (more…)

MMORPG Gold Selling – Not all that glitters is gold

MMORPG Gold Selling - Not all that glitters is Gold “Buy WOW Gold Cheap”, “Buy Maple Story Mesos”, etc. – we, as gamers, are practically plagued by the ads like these. We see them inside the Google AdSence rotation, we are spammed with them while playing our games and reading our emails… More on that, many of us are directly abused by gold farmers and their in-game activity like robbing us of good spots and top-rated mobs. Still, I’m sure i would be safe to say, that even if you didn’t buy in-game currency, someone you know did that, and maybe more than once. This is a huge market, but were you ever wondering how it’s working and what you are stepping into when you decide to “buy cheap gold”? (more…)
