SWTOR: What happens if you lose your Security key?

SWTOR: What happens if you lose your Security key?

Like some other games (those of Sony Online Entertainment, for example), Star Wars: The Old Republic is utilising a system known as “security key” to raise another wall of defence between your account and those who’d like to get a hold of it. But not many gamers are aware that this system can also become a wall between them and their own accounts in case the key is lost. And, turns out, it’s way more easy to lose the key than anyone would’ve expected! So, what happens if you use Security Key for your SWTOR account and you lose the key, and how can you lose it in the first place?

How the Security Key system works?

The security key is a string of numbers generated randomly by a special algorithm using a key attached to your account. When you want to login, you have to enter the code, and the system checks if this code could’ve been generated using your key, or if it belongs to someone else’s account.

There are two ways to obtain a security key. The first one is buying a physical device that generates numbers, and the second one is to install an iPhone or Android app that does the same job.

BioWare encourages everyone to use the security keys, and besides the uncomfortable procedure of opening an app or looking for the physical key and typing in the numbers each time you want to login, everything is fine. Or is it?

SWTOR: What happens if you lose your Security key?

What happens if you lose access to the key?

Obviously, you can’t access your account anymore. That’s what happened to me after i didn’t played SWTOR for a while. Well, if you can’t get in, go and knock so someone can let you in, right? In case you can’t enter your security key, SWTOR website recommends sending a request to their support. So i did.

What they don’t tell you is that their support would not answer any account-related queries by email due to security reasons, as they put it. But i learned it only after going through half of their website to find the right form to send a support request, and then waiting for hours to get an automated response telling me it all was for nothing.

So, if you lose your security key, the only way to get access to your account again, is to call Star Wars: The Old Republic support by phone and talk to someone. What’s the problem in that, you might ask? Well, if you live in USA and English is your native language, then the only problem for you would be spending half an hour trying to figure out which way to go in BioWare’s phone support system – “if your brain is blowing up, please press 0″ – and then waiting in line for someone alive to get back to you. For everyone else, add overseas calling costs and language barrier problem.

As for myself, obviously i can write in English fluently enough, but my spoken English is much worse due to the lack of practice. Many people who are playing SWTOR aren’t native English speakers as well. As for the overseas calling costs, BioWare at least has a Skype number, so if you’ve never used that, you would need to register an account and download the program to avoid paying phone bills.

When you finally get to a support representative, they will ask for your account information and will ask those secret questions you wrote down in your account. Good thing there are more than one of those, because i completely forgot an answer to the first one. If you forgot your answers to all of them, well, i dunno what happens then, the only thing for sure is that you’re screwed.

Well, this post is getting kinda long, but i haven’t yet mentioned how you could lose access to your Security key codes. I will write another post about that soon.
