SW:TOR – Reason Why You Could Lose Your Security Key

SW:TOR - Reason Why You Could Lose Your Security Key

I was thinking of playing Star Wars: The Old Republic again, but i lost my security key and had to dance around SWTOR support like a drunk shaman around ancestral spirits, or something. So i wrote this post – what happens if you lose your Star Wars: The Old Republic Security Key here – but it was already getting long, and i didn’t tell how exactly one could lose the said Security Key. As i found out, it’s much easier than anyone might think, at least if you use BioWare’s iPhone app.

Let me tell you the truth: the BioWare’s app is full of crap.

Just take a look at this list of reasons why you could lose your Security Key with it:

1) If you delete the app – accidentally perhaps, or thinking that you might restore your Security Key later – well, the thing is, that you can’t. It’s dead with the app. You have to call BioWare support over the phone to unlock your account.

2) If you update your iPhone’s operating system – and Apple likes handing out new versions every now and then – the app data is lost too, because every app is deleted and reinstalled after OS update is finished. I am talking about major updates here, like from iOS4 to 5 or 5 to 6. Update your iPhone – and you have to call BioWare support.

3) If your iPhone died or got lost or stolen, or whatever – you have to call support.

Say, is that so hard to use iCloud to store access keys, so if the app or the phone are lost, you DON’T have to call BioWare support? The hell, it looks like you have to call them each time you’re going to sneeze near that app!

Honestly, i don’t know if it’s any better with their Android app, because i don’t own an Android device, but i wouldn’t risk playing with it either.

As for the physical Security Key device that BioWare sells, well… You can always forget it in a hotel, or drop it into a glass of liquid, or something like that. It’s that kind of thing that could happen to anyone and might or might not be avoided, but what they’re doing with the iPhone app COULD and SHOULD have been avoided. But it wasn’t.

Something to think about when you’re logging into Star Wars: The Old Republic with your Security Key generated by your iPhone.

You forgot to mention that the physical security keys are not even being sold outside of the US, meaning that even if somebody from Europe wanted to get their hands on it (and already didn’t get it from years back) it can only be done through relatively unreliable sites and you will have to pay for all the shipping costs.

actually, i didn’t know that at all, thanks for adding this info! i know they don’t ship physical keys to my country, but I assumed that these thing are being sold in EU at least
