ChickGeekGames 2.0 – now with WordPress!

God, was this hard, you have no idea! But here it is – a new design, new categories and tags structure, new hosting and new toys for me to play with, heh heh. Okay, what is going to change now? Previously, ChickGeekGames was a part of Blogger – a free blogging platform owned by Google – so it was hosted on their servers and ran on their software. Now, ChickGeekGames has been moved to WordPress, which is a free blogging software, and i had it installed on a separate (not Google) hosting. Now, if you came and something isn’t working, then either i do maintenance at that very moment, or something is broken and i’m not avare of that, so you just leave a comment somewhere – doesn’t matter where, i get them all anyway. Phew! Now, what else is new, besides the impeding doom of breaking something down? Unfortunately, Google Friends Connect didn’t make it, anyone who used that – you’ll have to subscribe to RSS now.

What’s new?

The new shiny theme – “Black Aperture” by Matt Brett, which i had to customise it A LOT, but it’s still great. By the way, that logo you see above – the ChickGeekGames ones – it’s not an image, it’s a pure CSS3 effect. Was really fun to make, when i learned HTML and CSS ages ago, things like these were impossible. Anyway, moving on…

We now have “Related posts” with big cool pictures, i hope you’ll like them, because i just love them!

We also have new categories and tags – i had to rearrange posts, because Blogger uses a different structure and it’s incompatible with WordPress. Old “header posts” are gone (i deleted them, for good or bad) because now that i have categories (Blogger didn’t support them) it doesn’t make any sense to stash links in a post.

As i mentioned above, Google Friends Connect didn’t make it, because Google jettisoned support of non-Blogger sites, and now this one is NOT on Blogger, so bye-bye friends connecting to each other… ahem. If you used that, you’ll have to subscribe to RSS because no updates will come your way now.

The old Blogger version is still online (and will remain as such), but all the links and posts are now forwarding to this new WordPress blog.

 What’s next?

I learned a huge deal about the technical side of things – setting up a local server to run WordPress, theme editing, Blogger to WordPress migration process (obviously :), choosing and setting up hosting, changing domain settings, moving WordPress from local to a live server (real pain in the ass!), fixing MySQL databases, even setting up auto backups…

Lots of things. I think i’ll write a few posts about that, in case someone needs them.

What’s with the ads?

Oh, yeah, about that… There will be more ads. Sorry about that, but i have to pay for the blog’s hosting now – so i have to at least cover the cost of that – and if there’s something left, i was going to buy something cool like a wiki plugin and finally do the “Alicia wiki” thing right, because… you know… it’s completely unusable as it is :/ So, anyway, even if you’re not interested in ads, please don’t block them – add chickgeekgames.com to your adblock’s exception list. Pretty please ;)
